The trail life is not for Caleb

So my buddy Caleb expressed interest in joining my adventure for a short 100 mile section starting at Reds Meadows and ending at Sonora pass. Like every beginner he over researched, over packed, and didn’t listen. He also did a poor job hydrating and the moment we started to climb out of Reds Meadows the elevation wrecked him.

We made it 5 miles before we hunkered down for the night, that 5 miles had Caleb second guessing the next 95. The following morning he felt better but struggled all day getting the oxygen he needed out of the thin air. I had to urge him to drink water as we walked over stream after stream and he barely nibbled his beef jerky when we stopped.

People, don’t do what Caleb did.

The 3rd day he finally began finding a groove but by this time he was already done. Lucky for him we were on schedule to make Tuolumne Meadows at the end of the day. No sooner than I got cell reception he was phoning his wife to pick him up.

While not exactly mountain man material his mood could not be shaken. It was the slowest 3 days of my entire trip but I enjoyed every step thoroughly. He managed to stay hilariously funny while appearing on the verge of death and reminded me time and time again why he is one of my best friends.

Hopefully he takes it as a wake up call and gets his ass in the gym! Enjoy the pictures from this incredibly beautiful section.
